- Blackjack has the lowest house edge over the player of all games ever. So, in essence, it is the most player-friendly game in the world (Best ways to win).Of course, you also have to know what you doing (a basic glossary can be found here): there is a large volume of rules that not many people know but that make a difference between a winner and a loser.
The famous card game known as blackjack has rocked the gambling world for centuries. Surely, people have lost a lot over it, but there were a lot of lucky winners over the years as well. The reality of it all is that probably some of the biggest wins haven’t been made public and will forever remain a secret between the player and the dealer, especially big wins from previous decades when there was no internet, no smartphones and no ever present media.
But just for fun, what are the biggest wins known in blackjack and who were the lucky players? Here are the top five.
No.5: Shoeless Joe
We have a mysterious case of a winner whose identity was never revealed. As is turns out, it was an elderly man known as the Blackjack bum or Shoeless Joe (not related to Chicago White Sox player). He was believed to be kicked out of the house by his wife and was evidently not taking care of his personal hygiene for a while.
He came into the Treasure Island casino in 1995, without any shoes on his feet, and sat at a blackjack table after cashing in his $400 social security check. The man was ignorant to basic blackjack strategy, splitting 10s and doubling down on hard 12s and hard 13s, but that week he managed to win around $1.5 million. However, it must have triggered his unpleasant side, as he became aggressively annoying, which gave casino management reason to rejoice when he finally lost and was thrown out of the casino.
No.4: Ken Uston
Traditional 21 – an Ace and any 10-value card is an instant win in all blackjack variants Hard 20 – any two 10-value cards will give you a total of 20. In most variants, it’s wise to keep hold of. Winning blackjack games, on the other hand, will be a different matter. Theoretically, it is possible to win 100% of every blackjack game you play, as long as you make the optimal decisions. In fact, blackjack is the only casino game that offers a feature like this. But, is this really possible in real life?
Blackjack Hall of Fame member Ken Uston was a complete opposite from our previous winner. Relyig on Edward Thorp’s Beat the Dealer book, he based his play on strategy, rather than pure luck, mastered the mathematical elements of the game and applied them on team play.
He is referred as the creator of blackjack card counting teams, early predecessor of the notorious MIT team.
Between 1975 and 1981, Ken Uston and his team of card counters accumulated winnings resulting in a sum worth more than $4.5 million, running the impressive streak across multiple tables and numerous casino venues across the United States. Check our Blackjack History Infographics for more info.

No.3: Kerry Packer
Our next contestant is the famous Aussie millionaire Kerry Packer. He was a media magnate, with a reputation of a passionate gambler – and was always considered one of the highest rollers in casinos worldwide. In 1991 he was sitting at a public blackjack table of the Las Vegas Hilton casino. It didn’t take him much to win $7 million for that one night. Apparently, the Hilton had a special private room made for him after that. When he came back the next year, he reportedly gave back $10 million to the casino, but he probably didn’t regret the loss all that much.
No.2: Don Johnson

One of the wins that set on fire the gambling world was certainly Don Johnson’s accomplishment in 2011. No, we are not talking about the famous ‘Nash Bridges’ Don Johnson, but it was also a pretty resourceful man, a CEO of Heritage Development LLC company. He had an unbelievable winning streak from December 2010 to April 2011, earning a total of $15.1 million playing in several major Atlantic City casinos.
The successful blackjack player first won $4.23 million at Caesars Atlantic City, then $998,000 at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa the same month. After a while, his luck struck again, big time. He won $1.8 million at Borgata again, and in two nights another $2.25 million. And lastly, he won $5.8 million at Tropicana Casino.
As he claims, he didn’t count cards apply any other technique. He simply took advantage of every favorable house rule there is, and won more as he played more. According to some interviews, he managed to negotiate a certain discount on his loses in order to keep playing, and it certainly paid off.
No.1: Kerry Packer
It’s not a mistake. We simply have to mention Kerry Packer once again. Not just because we want to, but because the man has had an extraordinary gambling career.
How To Play Winning Blackjack
After becoming a regular at Las Vegas whenever he had time off or was on holiday, he came back for another round in 1995. Packer was reported to have played up to 8 hands simultaneously at multiple blackjack tables at Las Vegas MGM Grand this time. He placed bets of $250,000 per hand, and 20 times in a row there were only winning hands for him.
Within 40 minutes he finished his blackjack session cashing out $20 million. Allegedly, he renounced $1 million in favor of the dealers, leaving it behind as a tip!
The world of blackjack is truly inspirational, wouldn’t you say?
In specific, a blackjack gambler can learn to win by mastering basic strategy and card counting. These are two different bodies of knowledge, so I want to discuss each in its turn. Only through utilizing both can you be a winning 21 player. Let’s start with the foundation of good blackjack.
What Is Basic Strategy?
“Basic strategy” is a collection of suggested moves based on the mathematics of blackjack, tested by running computer simulations on billions of virtual hands. Each of your potential hand combinations is compared against all possible dealer hands and a best percentage play is suggested for each possibility. These moves are printed on blackjack basic strategy charts using a spreadsheet format.
Gamblers study these charts, comparing their hand against the dealer’s card to know what to should do in each situation. When a strategy table is memorized for any given set of 21 rules and a player can make the best move, this is called optimal play. The memorization work is not easy, but this gives you the best chance of winning without either counting cards or cheating–which are two different things.
A couple of things should be made clear about basic strategy. One, it cannot make you a winning blackjack player all by itself. Like most casino games, twenty-one gives the casino a house edge. If the numbers play out and you don’t get lucky, the casino is going to take your money. Optimal play assures the least amount of cash is lost, but don’t labour under the assumption you’ll be assured of winning big. You might ask why you should study these techniques, then. If you pick the right game of 21, basic strategy should get you close enough to a 100% expectation that being a card counters matters.
Another thing to remember is that each variant of 21 has entirely different odds. Even if you chance just one of the rules, you’ll face a slightly different set of probabilities and need a different strategy guide to play at an optimal level.
Card Counting
Once you play a game near 100%, card counting helps you gain a real advantage at 21. Don’t assume you have to be a mathematical genius to count cards. The math is simple. In fact, the characteristics of a good card counter needs are concentration, the ability to multitask, social skills, and perhaps a little bit of play acting ability. Basic maths skills are essential, but I’m talking quite basic.
The idea behind this technique is to keep track of when you have the advantage and when you don’t. High cards are good to have, while low cards are bad. So when a high card leaves the deck (is dealt), you count in the negative, in most cases -1. When a low card leaves the deck, this is a positive situation, so you count +1. When your total gets into the positives, you bet more. When your total goes into the negatives, you place the minimum bets.
A few things complicate matter. First, the casino doesn’t like card counters, because the practice gives the gambler the edge, not the casino. Therefore, casino management keeps an eye out for these people. Someone maxing out wagers when they have an advantage and betting the minimum when they don’t is likely to be noticed. This means you have to be stealthy about what you’re doing. Being stealthy doesn’t mean you sit quietly and calculate, because dealers, pit bosses, and security personnel are taught to spot these types, as well. To avoid notice, you’ll need to have conversations with dealers and players, appear to be a big better who doesn’t know a whole lot about the game, and otherwise be at the casino for the sake of enjoyment. It’s a complicated task, but also the only way to win at blackjack.
Winning Blackjack Rules
Learning how to select the proper table in the live casino or virtual room in an online casino is also important. Players need to know which rules give them the best odds. Playing at a table with fewer decks is important, but that isn’t as important as what happens on a natural 21. In most games of twenty-one, receiving a two-card or 10-ace “21” wins you a 3:2 payout. In some games, this only pays out 7:5, 6:5, or even 1:1. Avoid these games, because they turn even single-deck blackjack into a disaster. Another rule to spot is what the dealer does when holding a soft 17. If you find a game where the dealer has to stand instead of hit, this is a big advantage for you.
Read about the full list of game rules and find which ones are most advantageous to you. This helps you pick the optimal game for you. Of course, finding the best odds means you might have to memorize optimal play charts for multiple games. This is usually worth it, especially since many of the best variants are going to have similar suggestions.
